Town of New Bern
Founded by Swiss and German immigrants in 1710, "New Bern," named for Berne, Switzerland, is the second oldest town in North Carolina. In the latter half of the 18th century, Royal Governor William Tryon realized the need for a permanent capital in the colony and selected New Bern.
The Federal Era saw New Bern develop fully. Many successful merchants and sea captains built fine homes that can be seen on leisurely walks through the historic district. Detailed maps and walking tours of the historic district are available at the New Bern/Craven County Convention & Visitors Center, 203 South Front Street.
A variety of restaurants, familiar hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts afford guests an abundant choice of dining and lodging. Just 15 miles down Highway 70 East is the small, cozy community of Havelock, which took the name of the British General, Sir Henry Havelock. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is located in Havelock. Home of the Harrier Jet, it is the largest U.S. Marine Corps air station in the world.
Plenty of recreation is available in New Bern and Craven County. For the golf enthusiast, the area has many excellent championship courses. Both group and individual play are welcome.
