Town of Fayetteville

Fayetteville and Cumberland  County are rich in both history and natural beauty.  The area's modern history dates back to before the Revolutionary War when the settlers first came to the mouth of the Cape Fear River, along the Cross creek, in the early 18th century.  A number of notable national events happened in Fayetteville, including:  North Carolina delegates ratified the U.S. Constitution in Fayetteville and chartered the University of North Carolina in 1789; George Washington chartered the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry, the oldest milita unit in continuous existence in the south, in 1793; and George Herman "Babe Ruth hit his first homerun as a professional baseball player in Fayetteville in 1914.

A 20-mile driving along the Dogwood Trail gives visitors a chance to explore some of this beauty.  Covering 85 acres, the Cape Fear Botanical Garden offers a range of plants and ecosystems of the Cape Fear region.  The Cape Fear River Trail is yet another opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of this area.

Fort Bragg

In 1918 when Camp Bragg was founded just outside Fayetteville, few would believe that today Camp Bragg is the world"s largest airborne facility, and the largest military installation in the country. Fort Bragg houses the Army's Special Forces, and such prestigious units as the 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps.  The Golden Knights also call Fort Bragg home.
